More information
As it now stands, Monachty Mansion is a unique example of a late Georgian gentleman's
sporting estate, with its stables, service courtyards, walled garden & original
farmyard, parts of which date from medieval times. Monachty Estate is located in the county of Ceredigion, 15 miles south of the
University town of Aberystwyth & 3 miles due east of Aberaeron. During your time at Monachty you can choose short breaks from a wide range
of different activities to make your stay even more enjoyable. Nigel & Wendy Symons Jones introduce you to the Ceredigion country estate
which offers quality Bed & Breakfast accommodation and country pursuits. The estate is set in beautiful accomodation, quiet countryside, surrounded
by its own farm and extensive woodlands.

SHOOTING
An organised driven shoot of pheasants and partridges is run over 1450 acres
from September to January. Bags vary from 150 to 450. Most of the drives are
over deep wooded valleys giving really testing birds.
FISHING
The estate has salmon and sewin (sea trout) fishing over several beats through
the local angling club. We also have a small boat for hire for sea fishing mostly
mackerel and bass.
CASTLES
There are many local castles to explore, from our local Dinerth castle, just
half a mile away down the valley, which was last sacked in 1062, to Aberystwyth
Cilgerran.
WALKS
A large number of interesting walks are available, varying from our own woods, coastal and cliff walks to fairly easy mountain rambles.
BIRD WATCHING
Due to the varied habitat and coastline there is an abundance of song, estuary and birds of prey, including red kites.
HORSE RIDING
There are many bridle paths in the immediate area suitable for gentle hacking.
as well as our own woods and farmland. Experienced riders only by prior arrangement.
Monachty Estate is situated in West Wales, near to the historic town of Aberaeron,
very close to the shores of Cardigan Bay. The Bay is famous for its beautiful
beaches, varied wildlife and superb scenery.
Access from London & the south via the M4 & from the north via Shrewsbury & Aberystwyth.
The House
Monachty, which translates as "house of the monks" was originally
a hospitium, or guest house, of the great Cistercian Abbey of Strata Florida
20 miles to the north. The Abbey was founded in 1164 under a charter of Rhys
ap Gruffydd. This Charter states that the sons of Cadwgan and his wife Gwenllian
gave the commote of Anhuniog to the Abbey of Strata Florida so one can assume
that the hospitium was built not long after that. An hospitium was used as an
overnight stop by travellers on their way to the abbey. For an evening meal,
a bed and breakfast they gave a donation to the abbey according to their means.
